FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the process of having a custom designed garment made?
Matilda engages in a design consultation with the potential client. During this a discussion is had about designs details, fabrics, the event, styling, budgets, ideals and any other details necessary. Following this Matilda puts together a quote document which includes a range of designs to be perused.
Should a design be chosen the pattern drafting, toiling, fabric sourcing and fitting stages begin. Depending on design there could be approximately 2 to 5 toile fittings and one final fitting once the design is nearing completion. During the toile fittings Matilda works with her client to ensure perfect fit, proportion and designs lines. Once we are both happy with the toile the construction of the final product begins.
The best part about the toile process is the fact minor changes can be incorporated to the design. This means tailoring necklines, backlines, fit and length.
Once the final construction is underway there is one final fitting before finishing’s are stitched. This fitting allows for any minor alterations if needed and gives the wearer a chance to see their design near completion.
I don’t know what I want or what will suit my body type?
That is perfectly fine, and probably more common than what you may think. Matilda will work with you to design something suitable for you and the occasion through the consultation and fitting process.
How long will it take to create?
Depending on design, a custom piece can take anywhere from 2 to 8 months. Be sure to get in touch to discuss your requirements for a more specific time frame.
What is a toile?
A toile is a mock-up of a garment made from a cheaper material. This allows the design to be tested, cut into, altered, and perfected before cutting into the actual garment’s material.
Is there anything I need to bring to fittings/consult?
Matilda will let you know if you are required to bring anything to your fittings. It can vary from each client as to whether they need to bring their shoes to check hem length, or wear a specific bra. Otherwise, just bring yourself.
How many fittings are required?
Depending on design there can be anywhere from 3 to 7 fittings. Speak to Matilda about your requirements and she can provide a more specific number for you.
How are fabrics chosen?
Matilda works with her clients to pick their fabrics. Throughout the fitting process Matilda will provide samples, feelers and images of fabrics and talk through what would work best for the design.
How do I pay for a custom dress?
If a design is chosen a 30% deposit is paid to get the pattern drafting, toiling, fittings and fabric sourcing started. Once fabric is chosen and a further 50% is required. This 50% payment is generally near time for the final product to be constructed. The final 20% is due on or before delivery.
If there are any additional costs incurred during the process, they are payable at the time of change. Please refer to the question ‘Will there be any additional charges?’.
Will there be any additional charges?
There are a few areas which can incur additional charges.
If a client has gained or lost significant weight and extra fittings are required.
Any design changes which incur additional fittings.
Any design changes which incur additional pattern drafting, fabric and construction.
If a client requires more than 2 consultations.
If the clients opts for high end or couture fabrics.
If any of these arise Matilda will speak to you about the changes in price due to the additional work. No additional work will be started until any changes and pricing have been agreed upon and paid for.
What if I loose weight, or plan on loosing weight? Will this affect the garment, fitting process and price?
The best thing is to be open and honest with Matilda. She is aware brides generally attempt to loose some weight before their big day, so let Matilda know so she can plan around this with you.
Sometimes, however, weight lose or gain can be unpredictable and this can greatly affect the fit of a design. If there is significant weight change there may be additional toiles and fittings required. Matilda will discuss any additions with you as this can incur fees.
What if I don’t like how the dress looks on me and it’s the third of fourth fitting?
Matilda always urges her clients to be 100% honest throughout the whole process. This way she knows if her client is unsure about a design or design aspect and can tailor it to be better suited to ensure the wearer is happy and comfortable.
The beauty of the toiling process is it gives the wearer an opportunity to visualise their design before the actual garment is constructed. If a client is unsure about certain aspects of their design it can be tailored during these fittings.
If, in the off chance you are not liking the toile by the third or fourth fitting, you would need to talk to Matilda about what it is you are not liking so she can work with you on amending to something you would be happy with.
How much does a dress cost?
This can vary greatly depending on design. A simple custom designed and tailored wedding dress starts at $3,000.00 and works up from there depending on detailing, fabrics, hand applique, beading, laces.
A simple racewear design can start at $1,500.00 and work up from there depending on detail, fabric, hand work and more.
