The Designer

—  your designer  —

Matilda Alegria is the pioneer of large-scale, high calibre fashion shows in Darwin. Matilda's mix of creative and ready-to-wear collections have impressed audiences and garnered national media attention since revealing her first collection A Minute’s Warning in 2012.

Since then, Matilda has cemented her role as one of the Territories premiere fashion designers. Her collections are unique and distinctive, from the femininity and gracefulness of LA REVOLUCIÓN to the urban grittiness of Alter Ego and the sculptural masterpieces of A Minute’s Warning.

Due to the increase in clientele for her custom made designs, Matilda has not been able to work towards another high fashion and arts event. Instead, she is focusing her time on producing jaw dropping wedding dresses, ball gowns, race wear, special event attire and beautifully tailored wardrobe staples.

Matilda was raised in an artistic household and was drawn to fashion at a very early age. While travelling frequently to South East Asia with her family visiting Hội An, world-renowned for its skilled tailors, Matilda kept a scrapbook of photos and designs that she wanted to get made and paid close attention to the importance of expert tailoring.

Matilda started honing her skills at just 16 years of age, studying Certificate IV in clothing production at Charles Darwin University under the guidance of renowned European designers Marlene Kranz and Lynn Ferguson. Matilda helped Lynn Ferguson design costumes for local theatre productions TRACKS and Gary Lang giving her a strong foundation in the art of costume making which is clearly evident in the haute couture feel to Matilda’s creative pieces.

Inspired by designers such as Alexander McQueen, Viktor and Rolf, and John Paul Gaultier, Matilda’s fascination with forms, shape, different textures and materials is evident in her wearable art fashion. Like her muses Matilda shows great passion for showmanship producing engaging and enriching fashion shows that wows her audience.
